Week 2 / You Are Secure in Christ!

This post is part of a series of weekly devotionals and discounts during the world-wide CoViD-19 pandemic. In wondering how I could offer relief in some small way, I thought about combining a weekly entry from a devotional I wrote several years ago and a 50% discount on one of my fiction books to offer a ray of hope. Sign up to receive each post into your mailbox every Wednesday morning.

Hebrews tells us “we have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure…” That hope has a name, Jesus Christ and the testimony about him and his rescue found in the Bible. May you rest in him during these scary, frustrating times…

When I was a kid growing up, there was a time when I prayed the sinners prayer almost every Sunday. I would talk back to my parents or do something mean to my sister during the week, and the next Sunday I was remorseful and scared I’d be sent to hell.

It wasn’t because of anything my pastor or parents said or did that caused me to doubt my salvation. I just wasn’t all that sure about the security of my salvation. Of course the more I grew in my faith the more I realized what the Bible says about my life in Christ:

I am is secure, both for my eternal life and my earthly life.

“He sets me securely on the heights,” David says. By God’s power, ultimately I will be safe and secure no matter how dark life gets. Which means I don’t need to fear a thing—whether by night or by day, whether in this life or the next. Proverbs declares the Lord keeps me so secure I won’t be caught in traps laid for me. And here’s a promise for my childhood self, as much as my adult self: the Holy Spirit has sealed us in the family of God, as a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance and redemption!

If I’ve learned anything in life between those years as a child and now, it’s that I am not vulnerable to attack, I am not in danger, I am not at risk of hell. God is a God who really can be trusted to keep me safe and secure. And who you are is who God says I am: God says you are secure!

Our Anchor-Hope Reminders from the Bible:

He makes my feet like the feet of a deer
and sets me securely on the heights.
Psalm 18:33 hcsb

Though many wish to fight,
And the tide of battle turns against me,
By your power I will be safe and secure;
Peace will be my portion.
Psalm 55:18 tpt

Don’t fear a thing! Whether by night or by day,
Demonic danger will not trouble you,
Nor the powers of evil launched against you.
For God will keep you safe and secure; they won’t lay a hand on you!
Psalm 91:6 tpt

The LORD is your security.
He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap. Proverbs 3:26 nlt

When you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed in Him, you were also sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. He is the down payment of our inheritance, for the redemption of the possession,b to the praise of His glory.
Ephesians 1:13–14 hcsb

We know that God’s children do not make a practice of sinning, for God’s Son holds them securely, and the evil one cannot touch them.
1 John 5:18 nlt
