Week 1 / You Are Victorious in Christ!

This post is part of a series of weekly devotionals and discounts during the world-wide CoViD-19 pandemic. In wondering how I could offer relief in some small way, I thought about combining a weekly entry from a devotional I wrote several years ago and a 50% discount on one of my fiction books to offer a ray of hope. Sign up to receive each post into your mailbox every Wednesday morning.

Hebrews tells us “we have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure…” That hope has a name, Jesus Christ and the testimony about him and his rescue found in the Bible. May you rest in him during these scary, frustrating times…

At chapel in Bible college we would often recite this triumphal declaration together:

“I’ve got the victory, hallelujah!”

Do you believe that? That you stand in victory, that you are victorious in Christ?

I understand that life can feel everything but victorious. We fail an important test or lose a prestigious promotion. We blow up at our kids or give in to temptation. We lose a close friend to cancer or nearly lose our own life in a car accident.

We’ve got the victory? More like, “We’re defeated, left-and-right!”

Yet when we turn to God’s Word, we are reminded who we really are. We are not defeated, because God says we are victorious thanks to Christ’s resurrection! The Bible says we have the victory over three areas: circumstances, sin, and death.

David declares that victory comes from the Lord for all his anointed ones. He answers them from his throne with victorious power. He crowns his people with victory. John tells us that through faith in Jesus every child of God defeats this world. Paul reminds us that through Jesus we have victory over both sin and death, reciting that ancient battle cry:

“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:55 niv)

The next time you’re in the shower or driving in the car and you’re despairing over your circumstance, your sin, or even your mortality, join with me in shouting my college declaration:

I’ve got the victory, hallelujah!

Amen? Amen!

Our Anchor-Hope Reminders from the Bible:

Now this I know:
The LORD gives victory to his anointed.
He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary
with the victorious power of his right hand.
Psalm 20:6 niv

I wait quietly before God,
for my victory comes from him.
Psalm 62:1 nlt

See, God has come to save me.
I will trust in him and not be afraid.
The LORD GOD is my strength and my song;
he has given me victory.
Isaiah 12:2 nlt

When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”
1 Corinthians 15:54–55 niv

But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:57 nlt

For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
1 John 5:4–5 nlt
